Maybe I'm just going to be late for every post that I make in April? And maybe that's ok. Progress is still being made and now that the month is coming to a close things are becoming a lot nicer really quickly. AFTER ACTION REVIEW Big Goals: 1) Schoolwork. I did all of it. I put together my final presentation including recording the whole thing. Then I did the end of the class reflection paper. After that I worked on the stuff for my other class which involved a lot of editing of things that I already wrote throughout the year thus far. I also put together a public display of reading which you can listen to on my website! Just go to "Literary Works" then "Free Stuff!" It's a two minute clip of the first scene from the latest novel I've been working on. While I'm not sure exactly what I want to do with the rest of the novel that is probably one of my favorite first scenes I've written thus far in my career. After that I wrote the reflection paper for that class and handed it all in! The classwork itself is done, the only thing left is to attend two classes and one more journal entry. (Which is simply a did you do it yes/no thing so I'm not counting it as remaining work.) I'm so excited to put a close to this chapter of my life! It was certainly worth it, but by the end in particular it's been feeling like a distraction from the parts of my life that need focus. Having that off my plate is more relieving than I would have expected. 2) I'm not doing the rest of my after action review because honestly nothing else got done. I gave myself a pass to do the schoolwork, the one big action item for the weekend (dropping some broken furniture off at the spring clean up event) did get done, and otherwise I watched some youtube as a break. Completely worth it to get the big goal 1 done, because I could have stretched it out to include this week, but I really didn't want to. (Looking back at this I did actually breakdown the leftover cardboard boxes and hung up the dry erase boards that I mentioned as house tending options in the last checkin.) INTENTIONS/MINI-GOALS I'm using this week as a transition week, for finishing out goals that have been lingering or don't quite fit into the routine. There are a couple class related things to finish, plus I have a big focus on getting the first floor of the house ready have guests over this weekend. After that I have a planned rest day (when was the last time I said that?!). The week after I'll be establishing the new routine, just in time for the nice weather! Big Goals: 1) Attend two classes. Turn in one journal for creative writing. 2) Check in with Camp NaNo and update it before it finishes. Take some time to relook at what I already have done editing wise and review what the next steps are. I believe I was in the middle of splitting a big scene, so I should continue that a bit. (Limiting the time though to ~20minutes a day to ease back into the editing, starting Tuesday.) 3) For this week I'll be continuing to study Japanese for 15minutes a day. Next week I'll be increasing it to 30minutes a day. Small Goals: 1) A couple checkins ago I talked about some items that I had been meaning to post on eBay, but they need some research so I've been putting them off and they have now become frog items. I would like to get those posted before the end of the month. Another thing that will be really nice to get off the plate before the new normal. To properly figure out my progress and next steps for this goal I need to check over my monthly financials before the next checkin so that I can give an exact number on how much more I need to save/make to hit this goal. From that number I'll be able to see the next step forward on this path (Possibilities include; discounts for the items I already have on eBay so that they sell. Starting up the etsy store I talked about at the start of the year. Making harder choices about additional things in the house that we can sell. Turning in change to the change machine.) 2) Another frog item here; fill out that last registration that I meant to do two weeks ago and send that in. Also followup with the third library. 3) I'm ready to read a new book, so I'll be starting a fun read this week. I'm not sure what yet, nothing on my bookcase was standing out, so perhaps an eBook. 4) Continue to read one success principle a day. 5) While I've been focusing on the basement and garage the guests won't be seeing those this weekend. Thus they're going to be given a break and I'll be doing these things instead. I was also going to try to paint outside but the April showers have been constant, so I think I'll just accept the idea that now isn't the right time and focus on something that I can control. Not all of these things need to be done by the next checkin. But I would like six of them to be so that I don't get overloaded on the later half of the week. I did put these in priority order, so more from the top would be even better. - Clean the grill, make sure it has gas, do a test run cooking chicken - Donate old luggage and other medium sized items to a shelter - Put traveling stuff into car - Clean up trash that's blown into our yard - Put something in to make the first floor smell less like the pets - Deep clean first floor bathroom - Wash windows - Vacuum (best for Friday) - Clean up the front tree circle area - If possible mow the front of the house - Wash kitchen floor (best for Friday, particularly since it's going to be a muddy week) - A quick weeding of the patio - Brush animals outside so that there's less fur in the house (both checkins because Rev is blowing his coat)

A bit late to this checkin again. I was starting to feel stressed about being over-scheduled for the next couple of months so I took a step back and really looked at the schedule. It's busy, sure, but it's not as bad as my impression was. I also realized that I have to finish everything for my classes this weekend since next week/end are full. With that I also realized that *right now* is the time to relax. So I took a couple days to play games and hang out with friends. It's been lovely, and I'm much more prepared to take a couple days at home to focus on schoolwork. AFTER ACTION REVIEW Big Goals: 1) I did no schoolwork. Most of what's left is final projects and papers, so that's ok, I didn't miss anything. 2) I did edit while I was at writers group on Sunday. I didn't do anything more than that. 3) I manged to study Japanese for 15 minutes everyday Mon-Wed and did a half day Thurs. Small Goals: 1) Shipped out weekend sales. Didn't do anything with the stretch goal, which is fine. That's why it's a stretch goal. 2) Medium job keeping up with email. Did one out of two registrations. 3) Mostly played video games instead of reading. Still relaxing though! 4) Yesterday I took some lunch time to catch up on the principles I missed the days before. So this is a success. 5) Did the 5 thing fling for the basement and garage every day except Thursday. The basement I tossed more than 5 things the day before, so that's covered. The garage I won't be worrying about because the Spring Cleaning event is tomorrow and a lot of big things we've been meaning to get rid of are in the garage and will finally be tossed then. There will be a lot more room! INTENTIONS/MINI-GOALS Big Goals: 1) All the schoolwork. All of it. The only thing I want left on my plate after this weekend is attending two classes and one journal for creative writing. 2) Nothing planned. Making room for the schoolwork. 3) Study Japanese for 15 minutes a day. Small Goals: 1) Autopilot. 2) Keep up with email. Send in second registration. 3) Autopilot. 4) Read one principle a day. 5) I'm going to re-purpose this time for the next two checkins. I'll be having people over to the house next weekend and I'd like it to be really nice at that point. Thus there are some projects that need to get done instead of the garage/basement. - Saturday take carload of stuff from garage to the spring cleaning event - Paint the front stairs, weather says this will be a Monday task - Deep clean bathroom on first floor - Wash kitchen floor - Put away everything in the living room/dining room/foyer - Clean the grill, make sure it has gas, do a test run cooking chicken - Next Friday go grocery shopping and prepare food for event - Pick up trash from yard - Fix up the front tree circle area - Touch up weeding on the patio - Breakdown leftover cardboard boxes and recycle them - Hang up dry erase board and pin board in basement For those tuning into this round my master goals list is here. The weekend was a lot of fun! Spent a lot of time catching up with old friends who were in town. Eventually got some time at home and really feeling recharged so got a lot done there too~ AFTER ACTION REVIEW Big Goals: 1) I did do research for two objects for the presentation. I also wrote another 1000 words for creative writing and got it retyped onto the computer. Still need to format it and hand it in. Completed the stretch goal of emailing the professor about the final presentation as well! We're on a page and everything for the semester should work out splendidly. 2) Haven't touched this yet, but it will be my priority at writers group tonight. 3) Studied Japanese every day plus got one extra session in to make up for some I missed earlier. The 1/4 check in grade for this is 90% which is a solid passing! Everything is forgiven as I aim for 15 minutes every day (100%!) during the second quarter of this round! Small Goals: 1) Posted 10 items on eBay. 2) Emailed back library. 3) Haven't done as much reading as I'd like lately. Both books I'm reading are a bit slower paced than my usual. Not sure if I should start another that's faster paced, or simply keep with these. 4) Did read one principle a day. 5) Successfully flung 5 things from the basement and garage every day. (The house is getting so clean!) Planted the pussy willows and happily did some bonus work cleaning both the front and back porches. Also tossed some of the bigger items that have been waiting for room in garbage. Bonus) Test run of crafty project went very well! I'm pleased and will probably make a couple more of them for a while yet. INTENTIONS/MINI-GOALS I've been feeling a bit under the weather (just a touch), particularly with all of the weather happening. So I'm going to take it lightly for the next checkin. Hopefully I'll take advantage of it to relax and go to bed early. That all being said I might take it a bit liter until my classes are complete, it's less than three weeks left including finals. So I know it'll need some extra attention after the next checkin. Big Goals: 1) Finish putting together creative writing and hand in. Do creative writing journal entry. 2) Do something small with the editing every day. I seem to be avoiding this more than I should, so small reminders that it exists and isn't a frog will hopefully help. 3) Study Japanese for 15 minutes every day. Small Goals: 1) Ship out weekend sales. Stretch goals: put up the last 5 items I have put to the side to sell. I've been avoiding putting them up on eBay, not because I'm attached to them, but because they'll take some specialized research for selling. Getting this frog item off my mind would be nice. But also not a big deal if I keep ignoring it. 2) Keep up with email. Also send in registration for two more upcoming events. 3) Relax and read something! 4) Read one principle a day. 5) 5 thing fling basement. 5 thing fling garage. Stretch goal: start to dig holes for future trees. Obviously this completely depends on the weather, and I'd like to not do it all at once, so any progress would be helpful. Bonus) Continue crafting as long as it continues to be fun. For those tuning into this round my master goals list is here. The list of everyone participating in this round is here. I've been off kilter all week (nothing specific, just everything at once) and it's thrown my whole schedule off which means a lot less got done. It certainly didn't help that the week started with Wunderlist going down, so I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing when. Still, trying to get back on track for the weekend. AFTER ACTION REVIEW Big Goals: 1) Did do the creative writing journal entry and handed it in. Did write a page for creative writing. Did not research the presentation yet. 2) This was the big failure. Simply did not make this a priority. Ended up writing about half of one scene instead of two whole scenes. Le sigh. 3) Did study Japanese for 15 minutes every day before the actual time this was supposed to be checking in. Did not end up studying on Thursday, though. Only missing 2 out of the whole round so far isn't so bad. (At least that's what I'm trying to tell myself.) Small Goals: 1) Did not post anything new on eBay. Barely got the newest items packaged and shipped on time. (Just that kind of week.) 2) I did email the library. They responded but I haven't responded to that yet 3) I did start to read "Bad Monkey" and got a couple chapters in. Not as funny as I was hoping, but it does have its moments 4) Probably the main success this week. I've read a principle for every day, reading two when needed to catch up on a missed day. 5) Success on the basement and garage flinging. We did go to the store to obtain the big goal (pear trees) but they didn't have the kind that I wanted. Instead we went home with some pussy willows and will be back in two weeks for the trees. INTENTIONS/MINI-GOALS Friday is going to be spent with friends, but Saturday and Sunday should be quiet. SO I'm going to try kick it up a gear and do a massive catchup/get ahead weekend. If that doesn't seem to pan out I'll guess that my brain is ready for going down a gear and rest instead. Either way these minigoals will be heavy, and the next set will be a lighter recovery set. No matter how much gets done I'll try to be nice to myself. Big Goals: 1) Research two objects for the presentation. Write three more pages for creative writing and hand in. Stretch goal of an additional email to the professor about the final presentation and either of the end of the class reflection papers. 2) Finish writing the two smaller scenes and start to work on the one big scene split that needs to happen. 3) Study Japanese for 15 minutes every day. Stretch goal of an extra two sessions to catch up from earlier this round. If I don't get them this weekend I'll officially forgive them and just look towards the future. Small Goals: 1) Post 10 items on eBay. 2) Email back library about scheduling. 3) Autopilot. 4) Read one principle a day. 5) 5 thing fling basement. 5 thing fling garage. Plant the pussy willows. Bonus) Put together a test run of the new crafty project this weekend. For those tuning into this round my master goals list is here. The list of everyone participating in this round is here. Overall a pretty successful check in. If my back wasn't in quite as much pain that would have been nice. Of course I actually sat down to watch some of my shows too. It's nice to actually have some time set aside for such, and having a go to show to watch on the weekend. AFTER ACTION REVIEW Big Goals: 1) I finished the late journal entry and this week's journal entry for world civ. I also did the journal entry for creative writing AND did write the two new pages for creative writing before writers group. (Though I'm actually writing this check in at the write-in instead of beforehand.) 2) Success! I finished the fairly long scene that I added to fix a couple problems. The next problems will need two shorter scenes of their own, which will be used to solve about six problems. Slow and steady progress here, which is exactly what I'm looking for. Last time I did a major editing project I got overloaded, and I don't want that to happen again. 3) I'm one day behind in my 15 minutes of studying right now. I tried to do a double session over the weekend but I wasn't ready to concentrate for that long in a row. Small Goals: 1) Double! I posted another 10 items, double the original goal. I also have a bag of stuff from the basement that will be prime pickings for the next batch of stuff to get posted. 2) Went to the event, though I didn't end up enjoying it as much as I was hoping. Some of that was a very stressful day at work, and some was that the event wasn't as well attended as I was hoping. It's ok, it was good experience and we didn't lose too much money. 3) I'm continuing to read the physical book. It's long, so I've mostly been reading a chapter before bed. I did try to start another book over the weekend, but it was not at all what I signed up for. I've been carrying around this book for years with a certain impression of it, and now I realize that it's something completely different than that. It probably would have been a great book to read at 16-18, but not nearly as relatable at this point in my life. Ah well, another book off the bookcase. 4) I read another four principles, so I'm up to principle 8. None of them have been revolutionary thus far, though I do appreciate the fact that all of these principles are in one place/one book. 5) Double success! I've managed at least five things from the garage every day, though the choices are starting to get a bit more scarce. The basement has a lot left in it to go through, though I've been focusing on the boxes and that's been making such a huge improvement. It's much less stressful to go down there for any reason, though particularly when looking for something since I actually know where a lot of it is now. I also finished BOTH projects from last weekend; weeding the patio and taking apart the attempt at the garden bed. The backyard is looking much better for it! INTENTIONS/MINI-GOALS Big Goals: 1) Journal entry for creative writing. Another page for creative writing. I should do some research for the big presentation for world civ, but I'm not sure I'll have the time. I'll consider it a stretch goal for the check in. 2) Finish writing the two smaller scenes. Assess the rest of the needed edits and consider the best next step, probably a couple major scene splits/overhauls near the middle. 3) 15 minutes every day. Stretch goal to catch up on the one study session I missed this check in. Small Goals: 1) Post another five items. Keep up on eBay. 2) Email to anther local library for scheduling. 3) Start to read "Bad Monkey" on a recommendation from my mom and a friend from writers group. I'm hoping it's as funny as they said it was. 4) Read one principle a day, though it's ok if I skip Monday. 5) 5 thing fling basement every day. 5 thing fling garage every day. Big goal, to buy and plant pear trees. They're on sale this week and I'd been planning on it anyways, so this is accelerating the process. (Also I have a suspicion that this will expand to include some other perennials when I get to the store. We'll see.) For those tuning into this round my master goals list is here. The list of everyone participating in this round is here. I personally format my check-ins as an after action review, then the setting of intentions/minigoals for the next check-in. This is delayed and the goals a bit less done than I would have liked because I completely forgot to account for an event I had tickets for Wednesday night. Considering I was four hours short on 'get stuff done' time for this check in things were still reasonably done. AFTER ACTION REVIEW Big Goals: 1) Wrote another journal for creative writing, but actually didn't get around to the journal for world civ. I'll check the syllabus for the policy on submitting late work, I don't think she'll mind and it would be better for me if I do it over the weekend. I did not write another two pages for creative writing yet, but they are simmering in my mind, so they'll be better when I get to them. 2) I looked over my notes of things that needed to get edited and figured out the best way to fix the problem; write a new scene. I wasn't going to leave it at that though, I looked over the rest of the listed issues and determined that this scene should be able to fix 5 bigger problems and 2 smaller ones at the same time, if I play my words right. I started to write the scene in question and am about half way through. 3) I did successfully study Japanese for 15 minutes every single day!!! Small Goals: 1) Posted another 5 items and did ship out some additional sales. I also sent out some offers to those watching items to see if that would send anything along. 2) I did not iron the sign or check the inventory for Fridays event. Mostly that should be pretty easy, but it is certainly a priority tonight. 3) Read some of the book and made my way through a chunk of the podcast too. It's been getting way better, and I'm starting to get some good ideas for low key horror stories, or at least the kind of elements that I can add to any story to increase the tension. 4) I started to read "Success Principles". There are about 60 principles, so I'm trying to read one a day. I do have the first two done, and skipped yesterday in lue of more important matters. 5) Overachieved by doing the five thing fling in the garage every day and doing quite a bit extra in the basement. This lead to another five boxes of stuff out of the basement and a lot more usable floor space! I think I'll need to talk to the SO soon about what we actually want to do with the basement once it's clean and organized. (Crafting table anyone?) INTENTIONS/MINI-GOALS Big Goals: 1) Do the late journal entry and hand in. Do the next creative writing entry and hand in. Write two pages for creative writing. (This might happen at writers group, after my normal Sunday checkin, and that's ok.) 2) Finish the scene that I've been writing. Start to think about the best way to fix the next big problem. 3) 15 minutes a day of studying, or bust! Small Goals: 1) Post another five items. 2) Today iron sign, check inventory, and pack the car for the event tomorrow. Go to event right after work and enjoy it. 3) Autopilot. 4) Read one principle every day. 5) As usual the five thing fling in the basement and garage. I'd also like to finish either one or the other of the outside projects I started last week. (Destroying the attempt at a garden from last year and/or weeding the patio.) For those tuning into this round my master goals list is here. The master list of those participating in this round is here. I personally format my check-ins as an after action review, then the setting of intentions/minigoals for the next check-in. Please leave a comment, even if it's not related to the goals I don't mind, it's nice to know that someone sees this page!
AFTER ACTION REVIEW Big Goals: 1) Wrote one of the journal entries. The other's due date was delayed so I put it off a bit as well. I wrote another 4 pages for creative writing. I also reviewed the syllabus which says that I need an additional 8 pages of new material, but it doesn't need to be shared with the critique group. Thus I'm going to continue this piece (the start of another novel) until those 8 pages are done before turning it in. 2) I did completely prioritize the changes that need to be made to the book, but I just wasn't ready to start working on those changes yet. Possibly a little hang up from the last editing saga which was excessively mentally taxing. I will start it this week, though I will also slow down to more bite sized chunks in my editing goals. If I know that I can achieve it then I should be less likely to avoid it. 3) I didn't quite study every day, but I did sit down and catch up by doing 45minutes over the weekend. Not ideal, but I got the time in, and that is what I need right now. I've been playing with the kanji phone app and found a new way for the flashcards to work. I now have them only show me the words around the kanji, and then have myself choose from eight choices what should be there. I suspect that this will be fantastic for me for two reasons; the first is that I gain a lot of reading comprehension from context (this is true for both English and the French that I managed to understand) and the second is that a lot of Japanese words have a specific meaning within their context. The more exposure I have to these combinations the better understanding I should have of the language as a whole. Small Goals: 1) I ended up posting ~35 items on eBay. That's what I had prepped at the time and is a solid start, though not quite my goal of 50. I suspect it's really better for me, and my goal achieving, to keep the initial goal low and then overachieve. The last couple times I thought I'd post 10 and then posted 50 anyways. On the plus side there was a special deal going on which means all of those items went up for free and I still have an additional 50 slots to use! 2) Nothing planned, nothing done. 3) Read a bit more of the book in progress and completed the first season of a podcast called "Magnus Archives". It's quite good, though being the first season the audio levels are a bit off. 4) Overachieved! I started and finished reading "Leadership and Self-deception." It was an interesting read, not because it had a lot of new material, but because this put into words a transformation I had when I was 14 that turned me from an ever-angry teenager to the person I am today. I was a great read and I would recommend it to many, though I suspect that most writers have made the discoveries in this book already. 5) I have been flinging at least 5 things from the garage and basement every day. Instead of doing either of my two outside projects to completion I did half of both. I think I was ready to see some major improvements without expending a ton of energy. Overall it'll work out in the end. I often get in the mood to get a project off of my plate, and when that happens I'm sure these goals will get completed quickly. INTENTIONS/MINI-GOALS Big Goals: 1) Write the delayed journal entry for world civ. Write journal entry for creative writing. Write at least two more pages for creative writing. 2) Complete the one most important edit in the book. 3) Studying for 15 minutes a day! Small Goals: 1) Post another 5 items on eBay. Keep up with the sales. 2) Iron sign. Check inventory. Start to pack car for event Friday. 3) Autopilot. I'll probably continue to catch up on the podcast, so keeping it simple with the physical book. 4) Start reading "Success Principles". 5) It'll be raining all week so keeping it simple. 5 thing fling garage and basement. Anything else is bonus. For those tuning into this round my master goals list is here. I personally format my check-ins as an after action review, then the setting of intentions/minigoals for the next check-in.
Are any of your goals this round affected by the weather? AFTER ACTION REVIEW Big Goals: 1) Schoolwork has been going. I've done one journal entry for each class and attended both classes that happened since this round started. 2) I'm completely done with the initial read through, much faster than I was expecting. (It's like I've learned to identify problems since the last major edit saga.) I've been putting anything that I notice needs to get fixed into a notebook, and I'll be reviewing and prioritizing these things before starting the writing on paper editing. 3) I'm on a streak of studying Japanese for 15 minutes every day since the round started. The goal is to keep this streak up for the entire round. It'll be tough, but worth it. The first day I took the time to translate a news article, the next was route memorization, the third was a different news article. I'm not getting far in the articles yet (about one sentence really), but I am getting a little faster even now. Small Goals: 1) There have been another handful of sales on eBay totaling $50. A solid start to the goal, and more stuff out of the house. 2) The biggest prep for the event so far was to clean out my car so I can pack it for the event. It's a small step, but will certainly make things easier. 3) Been reading a physical book called, "Die for You" by Lisa Unger. The progress is slow, but w worthwhile read. 4) Started and finished the first book in this goal; "The Art of Non-Conformity". It was lackluster at best and a waste of my time at worst. At least it was a quick read, so I didn't spend too much time on it. Overall I don't recommend it. 5) The goal is to get the house prepared for the family visit. The approach is a pincer move. Every day I've been taking care of at least five things the the area outside the house, and at least five things from in the basement. Outside: The first two days I cleaned out all unneeded paperwork and garbage from the seating area of my car. Today I cleaned out the entire trunk. This is the first time that's been clean since September and it's great, so nice and spacious! Basement: The first day I took to set up the area for sorting, took an initial glance at what was there, and took care of five items. The second day I went all in and went through ALL 200 pieces of clothing that were in the basement. I ended up getting rid of 75% of it easily. I love seeing such a huge change since starting a goal. Additionally about a third of what I'm getting rid of is worth a couple bucks on eBay, so that'll be tying nicely into small goal 1 as well. I'm loving the synergy! INTENTIONS/MINI-GOALS Big Goals: 1) Write another journal for each class. Write and submit something for creative writing. 2) Prioritize what needs to get changed in the book and start working on the three most important points. 3) Keep up the streak! 15 minutes a day every day or bust! Small Goals: 1) Put up April's 50 items. This will take a little more work since the clothes from the basement need to get washed first, but overall should be doable this weekend. 2) Nothing. 3) Autopilot. Maybe start an audiobook or kindle book. Right now I'm only in the middle of one book which is weird considering I usually have 6 going at once. 4) Start reading "Leadership and Self-Deception". 5) Every day 5 thing fling the garage and basement. Plus at least one outside project for the weekend, subject to change based on the weather. I'm leaning towards getting rid of last years attempt at a garden, before the grass starts to overgrow the bed again. (The other main possibility is weeding the patio.) |
